The successful construction of the Lekki Deep Sea Port in Lagos will set the stage for massive additional development in the area, says Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Speaking at the completion ceremony on Oct. 31, he said an airport and other massive infrastructure projects will be built nearby. This will bring bring extensive developments and employment for Lagos State and the country at large, he said.
Sano-Olu also promised to expand the roads leading to the port to a six lane roads with a view to ensuring a seamless evacuation of cargo from the port. He also said that with projected 1.2 million Twenty Equipment Units (TEU)s, the port will make Nigeria a hub in the entire sub-region.
The project is the first deep seaport constructed through a build and transfer agreement.
China Habour Engineering LFTZ Enterprise (CHELE).built the billion dollar project for owners and developers Tolaram Groups, NPA, and Lagos State Government. It is expected to increase the country’s container handling capacity by up to 80 percent.
The new seaport has a berthing depth of 16.5 meters. It was built on more than 90 hectares of land at the centre of the free trade zone, approximately 60 kilometers east of Lagos.
At the completion ceremony on Oct. 31, China’s ambassador to Nigeria said the project is critical to promoting international trade for Nigeria, and it will boost China-Nigeria friendship, China Daily reported.
